COLTON - As the quarterback and point guard of Colton High's football and basketball teams, sophomore Josh Straughan thrives under the spotlight.

"I love the pressure," said Straughan.

Coming another sub-500 season for the Wildcats, it's that attitude that not only has Colton off to a stellar start, but is the reason that cause his coach to change the way the Wildcats play.

"Over the summer we implemented a new system where we push the ball a little bit more," said coach Paine. "We kind of turned him into the primary ball handler. We entrust him to make some of those decisions."

"I like making decisions on the fly," said Straughan. "I like dishing the ball off, making good passes and getting to my post plays."

In just his second year of high school, Straughan added he enjoys the responsibility of leading both on and off the court. His coach said his ability to show up and go all out everyday is a prime example that Josh plays well beyond his years.

"He's much more mature for a sophomore," said Paine. "His basketball IQ and his football IQ are huge. "

And that has led to a huge goal for the Wildcats, who are taking aim at a historic season.

"The goal from day one has been to get into state," said Straughan. "We've never done that, ever. These guys play together really well and hopefully we can keep it up."

"Our goal as a team is to do something that's never happened at this school, and that's to get to the state tournament," said Paine.
