Klas loves the free-fall!
By Sabrina Beale
MOSCOW, Id- He's been breaking records left and right. Moscow's Jeremy Klas has only been pole vaulting since 9th grade, but quickly became a natural.
"I had a gymnastics background so I had pretty good awareness of myself in the air and what not," said Klas. "So it just kind of came like second nature almost." While vaulting may seem a little intimidating to some, this senior said he lives for the free-fall. "The fact that I'm falling from 15 and a half feet is pretty cool," said Klas. "It's really hard to explain. It's one of the coolest experiences. It's one of those things that you have to try it and feel it and then you'll know. I don't know, it's fun." Moscow Assistant Track Coach Ron Edson describes Jeremy as a very determined athlete. "He sets his goals and he wants to go for them," said Edson. "There's no way or no how that anybody's going to stop him. He wants to be a dec-athlete and he's got the first part done. Vaulting is always the hardest one as a dec-athlete to learn." Klas said he hopes to compete next year for either the University of Idaho or WSU, but first he's got some business to take care of as he wraps up his prep career. "I would like to clear 16 feet sometime here soon," said Klas. "And then break the state meet record for 4A which would be 15 feet and five inches. So I really just have to compete at my fullest potential down at state and I should be fine. Then I'll hopefully have a record down there which would be cool." |
