LEWISTON - After posting a 6-1 victory in the opening game of a double-header, against the Moscow Bears on Wednesday night, the Lewiston High baseball team looked for the clean sweep and to start the early season with a 4-0 record.

In the fifth inning however, the Bengals looked to be in a little bit of trouble as they had runners on first and second. Then a strong throw by Kyle Craig from right field kept the Bears off the board with bases loaded.

Narrowly escaping a scare, Bengals pitcher Allen Wiley looked to give himself a little bit of breathing room as he went on to strike out the next two hitters. Still in the 5th inning, a fly ball to right ended the inning and Moscow came up empty-handed.

Switching field positions it was the Bengals turn to try and do some damage as Beau Kerns dropped in a single to start the Bengal attack. The junior collected five hits and three triples in the double-header.

Teammate Zach Holley followed with a single that set the table for Kyle Knigge who sat back and sent one to the gap in right-center. Two runs scored and Knigge strolled into third. The Bengals went up 9 to 0.

Finally Johnny Rake hammered one way out in the top end the 5th inning, putting the Bengals up 10-0 in the fifth, when the mercy rule came into play.

Lewiston went on to defeat the Bears 10-0.

Following the game, LHS head coach Tom Grunenfelder went on record to explain how good he felt his team is this year.

"Oh I think this is going to be a good offensive team," said Grunenfelder. "There's never any doubt in that. We'll be able to have 12 to 13 guys who can hit the ball very well. It's just a matter of getting the right guys to the right spots and whoever is hot. I'm not worried about us scoring runs."
