Neptunes ready to stroke

By Matt Loveless

LEWISTON - It's either extremely relaxing, or intense aerobic exercise... swimming

And while many of us are still sleeping, the Neptune swim team is hard at work. They are in the pool every morning at six, and they come back for another practice at four in the afternoon. Neptune Coach Chris Engledow is only looking to expand the program.

"We have a junior Neptune program that's going to start up this fall. We're going to have a lot of four, five, and six year olds on that team," said Engledow, in his first year as coach, "And then in January, we are planning on starting a Neptune Masters team which is 18 and over basically, which will allow the adults to improve their swimming if they want to."

The Neptunes became a year-round program when the Asotin County Family Aquatic Center opened. They now have about 50 swimmers on the team. Engledow is pleased to see a growth in his sport over the last few years.

"We've got a lot of college swimming around now with U of I up there and Washington State's had a women's team for quite a few years and so it's becoming a viable sport in this area."

Many of the Neptune swimmers have gone on to swim in college. The Neptunes travel to Spokane this weekend for a four-day meet. It's the Inland Empire A-B champonships. Over 500 swimmers are expected to be in attendance.
