Palouse Summer Series in fifth year
Twelve teams are on the Palouse for this weekend's tournament By Matt Loveless
PULLMAN, Wash. - The college baseball season is over, but WSU's field is still getting plenty of work.
That's thanks to the hundreds of high school players passing through for the Palouse Summer Series. Series Director Burdette Greeny said this started about 5 years ago, just as a tournament for his legion team. "We've grown each of the five years, just starting off as a tournament.," said Greeny. "Probably twelve teams, and now it's up to seven straight weeks of seven tournaments, 183 games, 76 teams, and about 1,450 players." The quantity of players does not overshadow the quality of play. 12 teams are in town just this weekend, and many of their players may have careers beyond high school. "The last two weekends we've had some really good baseball, with some college prospects. Guys from Cal, Oregon State, some draft pick guys, guys coming to WSU, UW, that kind of thing." Greeny said the weather has cooperated on the weekends, but most importantly in its existence, the series has brought interest in WSU, it's baseball program, and the Pullman community. "For WSU just getting exposure to the campus. People really aren't traveling through Pullman to get anywhere. You've got to come here for a reason, and that's a reason." Greeny added. "I can't tell you how many good comments we've had about the campus, just from these kids." This is just week four of the series. Games are scheduled this weekend through Sunday. |
