CLARKSTON - The Clarkston Bantams journey to state began after they defeated the Pullman Greyhounds 64 to 62 in an overtime thriller last Saturday.

As a result, the Bantams secured a 2A state playoff berth and look to improve upon last year's fourth place finish.

One Bantam player who won't be intimated on the big stage will be senior guard Dustin McConnell, who has made the trip four times.

"This will be my fourth trip to state," said McConnell. "So, it's very exciting to just have those opportunities."

"There's no mistake that we've had those four trips," added Clarkston head coach Brendan Johnson." Dustin has been a big part of it all four years. Dustin and Nick carry us. There's no better seniors. Not one complained ever in four years. They do everything that I ask them to do and they're very coach-able.

The Bantams tip off Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the SunDome in Yakima and will have their work cut out for them, as they face the number one team in the tournament. Top-ranked Squalicum will be their opponent on opening night and is favored to win it all again.

"They are the giants," said Johnson. "They're the second team in the state in all classifications."

"They're a very, very solid team," added McConnell. "They won state last year and they're ranked number one right now."

"If there's any day to face the best team it's that first day," said Johnson. "When they haven't shot on those rims, our legs are the freshest. So, our guys are going to go in believing. It's going to be a monumental task but one we're looking forward to."

On the bright side, should Clarkston pull off an upset the remaining part of the tournament should be a bit less daunting.

The Bantams also have four starters returning to the tournament from last year's team.

"Definitely the goal is to win a state championship," said McConnell.

"To play in the last game of the night on the main floor on Saturday," said Johnson. "That's what's on every coach's mind and heart at the beginning of the season and we're lucky enough to still be dreaming about that tonight. Now we get to hopefully make it a reality."
