Cougars return to Lewiston with different expectations

By Sabrina Beale

LEWISTON- Last year Azusa Pacific broke into the World Series field, for the first time in 23 years. This year they're making their second straight appearance, and are trying to become the first at-large team to win the title since 1980. The Cougs have been town since last week and were running through drills this morning at Church Field. Last year, Azusa was the top seed in the tournament, but went 1-2. Senior pitcher Zach Pettikas said expectations are different this go around.

"Last year we kind of came in just with the attitude, oh hey we're here," said Pettikas. "It was the first time in like 20 years that we'd been here. We're just gonna come and have fun. This year we're coming a little more focused and we know what to expect with everything that goes along with it."

The Cougars lost to LCSC in the Far West Super Regional last week, but would like another shot at the home-town team.

"We just didn't really hit so now we kind of know what to expect out of their pitching staff," said Senior Shortstop Matt Venegis. "And the great thing about it is our pitching staff did well and they kept us in the game to win so I'm looking forward to playing them again."

But before the Cougars can focus on a re-match with LCSC, they have to worry about their first opponent, Union College of Kentucky.

"We don't know too much about them," said Venegis. "We know they like to run a little bit. That's pretty much it. I figure if we just stay focused on our plan and how we play the game we'll do well."

Union and Azusa Pacific will play on Friday at 3 PM.
