Wauters sets school record

MOSCOW (UI ATHLETICS) – University of Idaho junior thrower Matthew Wauters saw his school record in the hammer throw fall three weeks ago to teammate Marcus Mattox at the Mt. SAC Relays. Friday at the Vandal Jamboree, Wauters took it right back.

On his second throw of the day, Wauters launched the hammer 209-11 (64.00m) to win the competition and break Mattox’s two-week-old record of 208-10 by just over a foot. The record throw capped off a solid day for the Bainbridge, Wash., native. Wauters cleared the 200-foot barrier on each of his six throws on the day, including tosses of 206-4 and 203-10.

After the throw, Wauters moves up to seventh in the West Region and 23rd in the NCAA in the event.

Three men’s throwers cleared the NCAA Regional qualifying standard of 186-4 on the day, as Idaho sophomore James Rogan threw 195-2 to finish second and Idaho redshirt Evan Ruud, competing unattached, took third at 190-7.

On the women’s side, Idaho freshman Gabby Midles won with a throw of 174-2, while Eastern Washington’s Erika Kirley-Price came in second at 173-4 and Idaho redshirt freshman Nikita Amy took third with a throw of 146-6.

The remainder of the Vandal Jamboree meet will take place on Saturday, starting with the women’s long jump and men’s javelin at 11 a.m. The track events begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.
