Warriors win at home meet
By Sabrina Beale
LEWISTON, Id- (LCSC ATHLETICS)- Lewis-Clark State College men’s and golf teams swept to both the team and individuals titles in LCSC’s portion of the Frontier Conference regular season tournament at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
There are five conference matches held during the season – three in the fall and two in the spring – and the combined team totals from each tournament will be used to determine the overall conference champion. LCSC’s 54-hole event wrapped up with the final 18 holes during Tuesday’s cold and windy condition and the LCSC men continued to chip away at Rocky Mountain’s overall lead. The Warrior men captured the conference’s fourth tournament of the season with an 884 total, while Rocky Mountain was second at 927. The 43-shot swing leaves LCSC just 10 shots behind entering the final 54-hole tournament, which will be held next Monday and Tuesday in Salt Lake. Scott Mooney, a sophomore from Meridian, took medalist honors with a 1-under-par 215 total. Mooney shot a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday for the best round of the day. Teammate Joey Ray, a senior from Olympia, Wash., finished second at 220. Ray began the day tied with Mooney and shot a 75. Two other Warriors, Chris Kneen of Isle of Man, and Nic Arrenbrecht of Johannesburg, South Africa, were among four players who tired for third at 225. Kneen shot a 73 on Tuesday, while Arrenbrecht shot a 75. On the women’s side, junior Juanita Villa of Medellin, Columbia took medalist honors with a 238, five shots better than Rocky Mountain’s Rachel Warren. Villa carded a 78 on Tuesday, which was the second lowest round of the tournament. Like Mooney, Villa either led or was tied for the lead after every round in the tournament. The Warriors finished with a 988 total to defeat Rocky Mountain by 12 strokes. Rocky, however, has all but clinched the Frontier Conference title with more than a 100-stroke lead over the Warriors. LCSC is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA and still has a great shot at earning a berth to the national tournament. Cortney Shrout and Samara Kluever both finished at 249 to tie for fourth overall in the tourney. |
