Sam Funk plays a vital defensive role on LHS soccer team
LEWISTON, ID - What do genetic engineering and athletes have in common? Usually nothing...but not in the case of this week's P1FCU Athlete of the Week! This young man is playing a pivotal defensive role on his soccer team, but over the next few years could be inventing new ways to save lives. Let's meet Lewiston High senior Sam Funk.

When we give out our P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," we give it to a student who not only excels in their sport, but someone who is genuinely a good person outside of it.

"I always try to give my all and help others if I see they need help," said Funk. "So I guess that would be it. I just try to do my best all the time."

Exactly, someone like this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," Lewiston High soccer player Sam Funk, who helps others, and does well in the classroom.

"Doing pretty good...mostly all A's and B's," said Funk.

Someone who possibly thinks outside the box in terms of what they enjoy in school.

"I really like physics this year, it's really interesting," said Funk.

Yeah someone who likes phys...wait what?

"I've never had a class like that before," said Funk. "It's all new material and I really like the way I'm being taught."

Ok fair enough...so are you looking to pursue physics in the future then?

"I've been thinking about genetic engineering," said Funk. "Just manipulating genes and implanting them and seeing what I can do with them. I'm not entirely sure what I'd be doing, but I just like what it does."

And, as I ask every week...if you had to choose one, would you rather be a Cougar or a Vandal?

"I've been really thinking about U of I right now because they have a really great engineering program overall," said Funk. "And I know once you complete it, there's a high rate of getting a job, which is really important, to me at least."

Very important! Ok back to sports, Sam plays soccer and track, and used to play others, such as football and basketball.

"Well I've played soccer my whole life and the conflict at the school is football is at the same time as soccer," said Funk. "So I chose soccer and I am not good at all at basketball."

As for leisurely activities?

"During the season I don't have a lot of time to myself but off of it I'll just hang out and do work," said Funk. "I mow lawns, that's about it."

In the future he might be a brilliant engineer, but for now, he's making an honest living mowing lawns. But what about the few free moments he does have?

"I really like to go swimming and during the summer go to the beach," said Funk. "I do go biking every so often on the Hiawatha Trail. I love hiking as well, outdoor activities. Oh I love to go kayaking with my friends. That's something I've been doing since I was little."

Find him on the field, in the river, on the trails, or in the classroom...and in a few years, in the laboratory. We're proud to recognize this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," Sam Funk!

"It's really an honor, I'm really happy to get this," said Funk. "I wasn't expecting it at all, it's really cool to me."

Saving the world one day at a time.

We hope you enjoyed meeting Sam Funk. Each week throughout this school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you'd like to nominate, just go to klewtv.com and then prep athlete.Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
