Cougar coach wants players to focus on mental discipline and basics
PULLMAN, WA - Mike Leach has a message for his players...slow down your thoughts and get back to fundamentals.

After last week's 55-21 loss to Arizona State, the Washington State Cougars are being encouraged by their head coach to focus on mental discipline and going back to basics. Mike Leach said after the game that his players were too hesitant and non-committal on defense, which really showed as the Sun Devils tricky read-option tore up the ground game for 282 yards and two touchdowns. The over-committing really showed as the read option had an even bigger effect on the passing game, as the Sun Devils Taylor Kelly passed for 275 yards and five touchdowns. Mike Leach stresses the importance of taking things one step at a time.

"It's too tempting for us as a team to clutter our mind with a bunch of extra stuff," said Leach. "Cause all that really matters is the next play and how you lineup and do your job and how you do it collectively. And if you're able to do that and have the discipline to do that, then you're a good team. If you don't have the discipline to do that, you're a good team to the extent that you do have the discipline to do it. If you're hit and miss, then you're gonna end up stabbing yourself, and that's basically what we did. We stabbed ourselves a lot and couldn't overcome it."

The Cougs will have this week to recover and focus on the fundamentals as they have a bye week, but then will play at Arizona on November 16th.
