As expected, University of Idaho regents and the state board of education approved the contract extention for Idaho football coach Robb Akey through the 2014 season.

Akey's new contract could earn him over $514,000 in 2011 up to $544,000+ in 2014 if he meets all seven performance-based incentives within the contract each year.

His base salary, paid by the state, is $165,796.80. Other compensation is a media payment of $190,000 per year, increasing by $10,000 every year. All salary beyond the base amount is paid by athletic department donors.

“We are committed to keeping our coaches and compensating them at a rate commensurate with our peer institutions,” Director of Athletics Rob Spear said in a statement released by the athletic department.

“The length of the contract demonstrates our belief in his ability to continue the successes of 2009 and to restore the image of Idaho football," Spear said.

Akey's contract, at just under $356,000 without incentives, is still the lowest of all WAC football coaches in 2010, according to a salary list published by the website www.coacheshotseat.com.

Chris Petersen is the highest-paid coach in the conference, at $1.5 million annually. Fresno State's Pat Hill and Hawai'i's Greg McMackin also make seven-figure salaries according to the website.

New Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes will bring in $450,000 in 2010, while new San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre will make $430,000.

Nevada's Chris Ault will make $435,000 in 2010. New Mexico State's Dwayne Walker and Utah State's Gary Anderson each make around $400,000 per year.

Salary numbers listed above are approximate and do not include compensation for meeting incentives listed in each individual contract. the website coacheshotseat.com claims to get its information from school and media reports. My own investigating turned up similar, if not matching information on each WAC coach.
