MOSCOW – The banner hanging above the Bear Den court says Girls State Basketball Champions, 1996.

That was the last year the Moscow girls won it all.

But the Bears’ young squad is leading some to wonder if another banner is in the stars, even sometime soon.

The Bears disposed of the Lakeland Hawks Thursday night in Moscow in the first round of 4-A District 2 playoffs.

In what stayed a close contest, sophomores Abi Quinnett and Chelsea Waters controlled the game in the 4th quarter, as they led what was a deliberate, clock-eating, assist-oriented offense. The two combined for 9 of the Bears 12 fourth quarter points.

The Bears defeated Lakeland 48-42.

On Tuesday night they host the winner of a loser-out game between Lakeland and Sandpoint.
