Playoff Time For The Panthers

Playoff Time For The Panthers

By Sabrina Beale

ASOTIN, Wa- High school football in November; that's exactly what the Asotin Panthers wanted. The team starts their run for a state championship Friday when they face Lind-Ritzville in first round playoff action. Head Coach Sal Lopez said his team's been preparing all week for the big game.

"We've kind of down-played it, and made it out to be just another game," said Lopez. "We've kind of changed our routine this week a little bit. We got an extra day of offense in, and didn't do our speed development on Monday like we normally did. We just changed the routine and woke them up a little bit. We tried to make them realize the loser goes home and winner goes on."

Lopez said his players are anxious to take the field.

"They might be a little too excited and may make a couple mistakes here and there," said Lopez. "But we told them, hey if you're going to make a mistake it's going to be at a hundred miles and hour."

So what's the Panther's game plan?

"We're going to try to pound them out, and spread them out, and throw the ball," said Lopez. "Hopefully they won't know which way we're going."

So if you're bored and looking for something to do, Coach Lopez has some advice?

"Come root on the Panthers, if you're not doing anything Friday, even though it's chilly," said Lopez. "If you're a Clarkston fan or a Bengal fan, come out and support us."

The game starts at 7 p.m. There are lots of other games going on as well as Genesee and Troy battle it out in the Kibbie Dome. Pullman travels to Prosser for their first round action. On Saturday, Kamiah and Orofino go head-to-head, with the winner of that game heading to the state championship. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
