Cubs flying high into Districts

By Matt Loveless

LEWISTON - District tournaments kick off tomorrow for Legion baseball, and again local teams are at or near the top of the league.

We check in with the Lewis-Clark Cubs, riding high at the end of a successful, but long regular season.

"Last year, for instance, we played 38 games, and that was pretty high. In the past 35 was about normal," said Head COach Justin Miller. "This year we played 50 during just regular season, A lot of home games. so we've had a lot of support from the people here in Lewiston and it's been great season. I can't believe it's almost over."

When we spoke with coach Justin Miller earlier in the season, he said the Cubs were having trouble with what he called "giving away games," and were 6-4 heading into their first tournament. It's safe to say they've turned that around.

"We ended up 42-8, which is pretty spectacular," said Miller with a smile. "We're pretty happy with that. We tied for first in our league with Coeur D'Alene, so as we going into the district tournament, we have a lot of games under our belt.

"We put ourselves in a lot of situations where we showed a lot of heart late in games. So, it seems like things are coming together at the right time, and hopefully we'll give it our best shot up there."

Only two teams will move on to state, and Miller said they're in a good position to do that, as long as they do what they've been doing.

"This is a baseball town, whether it's the Warriors, the high school team, or the legion program. We all are expected tot win because we do win pretty often. There's a lot of weight on these kids' shoulders, and when we've put pressure on them before, they've always risen to the occasion, as hopefully we're ready to go."

Miller says they will square off against either St. Maries or Post Falls in their first game Thursday. That game is set to begin at 2:30.
