600 turn out for Akey camp
By Matt Loveless
MOSCOW, IDAHO - Football is back on the Palouse. The University of Idaho practice field is getting some work this week.
That's thanks to the more than 600 kids who came out for the Robb Akey University of Idaho High School Team camp. Coach Akey says this is the culmination of a couple of weeks worth of camping. "Last week we had the young guys camp and we did that Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. We had 100 kids here, which was up - we had about 70 out here last year. There were 100 in here this year," said Akey. "Those guys had the opportunity to complete in all kinds of weather We started with snow on Tuesday, and ended up with blue skies and 70s degrees on Thursday." It's nothing but blue skies for the high school teams this week. The Moscow Bears and Lewiston Bengals are among local teams here for the camp, but the camp's reputation seems to precede itself. "We've got people from all over the Northwest, then we've got a number of individual players that come also, so we made kind of a little renegade team out of them," said Akey, "but we've got guys form as far away as North Carolina who have made it up to this camp." The mornings start in the 8:00 hour for these kids - and the camp runs all day. Wednesday night they ran what Akey called an overtime classic, competing in a college-style overtime period, starting on the 10-yard line. "We'll do the same thing Friday with full field games, and they'll get opportunities to play against each other, and they'll each get probably about three games on Friday morning," Akey said. The camp wraps upo Friday at 11:00. |
