POMEROY, Wa- It's a Wild West Road Rally in Pomeroy, Washington. Riders from all over the region stormed Garfield County Friday afternoon, in preparation for this weekend's event. Cars will race on eight county gravel roads, all hoping to finish Sunday with the fastest time. Steve Greer from Battle Ground races alongside his daughter, and said this area is brand new to him.
"We've never see these roads before," said Greer. "We never get a chance to look at them. She gets a route book or stage notes Friday night, and the first time we see these roads is when we go out on them at high speeds. She is the one telling me, we have intercoms in our helmets. She is the one telling me when the corners are coming up, how fast you can take them, and which way they go."
And when they say high speeds they mean it. Gravel Roads that are normally marked for 35 miles per hour will see racers travelling around 120 mph. Steve's co-racing partner and daughter Kelly said being in charge of directing your dad can be a challenge.
"It can be challenging, especially when he doesn't listen which happens sometimes," said Kelly. "It gets intense. The adrenaline gets going."
Todd Hartmann and Shawn Callahan are racing partners who have been in the field for over a decade. Both said they just love competing, and are looking forward to a great weekend!
"Rally racing in my opinion is the coolest kind of motor sport," said Callahan. "It's done out in the wild and there's no catch-fences. It's just you and the car and the road."
"We just come to these to have a good time," said Hartmann. "We're glad to be here in Pomeroy and I think it will be a great event."
