North Korea Kim Jong Il The Inner Circle
In this undated photo released by the Korean Central News Agency and distributed in Tokyo by the Korea News Service on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, left, rides an escalator as he visits a Pyongyang supermarket. The two people immediately behind Kim Jong Il are his sister Kim Kyong Hui, and his son Kim Jong Un, then vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea. The sister's husband, Jang Song Thaek is two behind Kim Jong Un, in light jacket. KCNA reported Dec 15, 2011 that Kim had visited the supermarket. The photo was the last distributed of Kim Jong Il prior to his death on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. Experts say without the benefit of the 20 years of preparation Kim Jong Il had before President Kim Il Sung's death, the youngest Kim will need the brains and political brawn of his father's closest confidantes before he formally takes power. Analysts say two close, trusted family members and political power brokers have emerged as his main protectors: paternal aunt Kim Kyong Hui and her husband, Jang Song Thaek, who have risen to the top of the political and military elite since the succession campaign began two years ago.
