LEWISTON, ID - "Fight violence, with violence" ... that's the message, Lewiston Police are trying to get across to local women.
Over the weekend, the Lewiston police department offered self-defense classes for woman related to public employees, or working as a public employee. This was the first kind of class performed by LPD, ever. Lewiston police Chief Steven Orr said it's important to teach basic self-defense techniques to women, since they're most vulnerable to attacks.
"The goal is to not make them experts in self-defense but to make them develop and create a mind for survival and a minimal awareness of their surroundings," said Orr.
"We want to try to prevent and avoid those situations and if their caught in those kind of situations how to react," said Lewiston Police Officer Dustin Hibbard.
According to the United States Department of Justice, one in nine young females will be forced to have sex and one in five will be a victim of sexual assault.
Because of the high turnout and positive response, Lewiston Police Chief Orr said he hopes to open this class up to all interested females at a later date.
