Officers shoot, kill man after hostage incident

CHUBBUCK, Idaho (AP) — Police in eastern Idaho say officers shot and killed a man in Chubbuck after he took someone hostage at a Petco store.

The name of the man wasn't released. The hostage was unharmed.

Chubbuck Police Chief Randy Severe says police were checking on the man's welfare Thursday evening when he brandished a gun and sped away.

A high-speed chase ensued. Though officers lost sight of the vehicle, they got a call a short time later reporting that someone had taken a man hostage at the Chubbuck Petco store.

Severe says when the suspect emerged from the store with the hostage, an officer with the Bannock County Sheriff's office determined the hostage was in imminent danger and shot the suspect in the neck, killing him.
