Group plans armed, walled community in Northern Idaho
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Marxists, socialists, liberals and establishment Republicans need not apply.
So says an unidentified group with a website which has details about The Citadel, a walled, planned community of up to 7,000 families to be built near St. Maries in Benewah County.
To live there, every able-bodied person 13 years or older is required to "demonstrate proficiency" in handguns and rifles, according to The Citadel's website.
And every able-bodied person "of age" within The Citadel must maintain a variant of the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle "with 1,000 rounds of ammo". (UpdateIs fortress city planned for North Idaho fact or fiction?)
Strange covenants, indeed, but The Citadel bills itself as a bastion of Jeffersonian liberty -- an armed, designated point of retreat when American society collapses. (Watch the Report >>>)
We wanted to call The Citadel and ask them about their plans for Northern Idaho but we couldn't find a phone number. And we're not the only journalists who are interested.
The Citadel's website says, after the Sandy Hook shootings, they've been contacted by a lot of reporters. But their website says "it's too early in the evolutionary process of the Citadel Project to accept these invitations" for interviews.
The Citadel's website says 20 mountain acres have already been purchased in Benewah County for the "first wave" of residents. But we could not independently confirm that.
And The Citadel also plans to build its own manufacturing plant -- for firearms.
We called community leaders in Benewah County for reaction but they have not yet returned our calls.

That's great. it's OK for teachers to teach our kids how to use a condom, and that all types of personal choices regarding sex are OK, (without parental approval). But it's not OK to offer an elective class regarding safe firearms training? I am afraid that the "Citadel" project doesn't quite pass the "Billy Bubba" test, but guess what?.....It's their right to establish and do whatever they want as law abiding citizens!
Linda, as stated Adam Lanza was trained by his mother, who was a gun enthusiast, so requiring training as a pre-requisite of owning a weapon would not have prevented the massacre. What governing authority is going to determine what level of training is suitable to own an 'assault weapon'? You don't need to go through driver's ed to go buy a car. It is unconstitutional to prohibit the sale of firearms based on the level of training. That would mean Grandpa Joe couldn't give little bobby his first .22, because bobby is not old enough to attend hunters safety and can't legally possess that weapon. I understand the system is flawed. But you trust the gooberment way too much if you think they deserve the power to blanket the country with that kind of reform. If my brother, or uncle, or third cousin, (where does it stop?) had a mental illness, I would not let them handle my firearms. That is MY decision, not the governments. Literally, millions of Americans would be disarmed if they controlled guns based on the mental health of family members.
Adam Lanza, the shooter at Newtown, CT was taught firearm safety by his mother, but that did not stop him from shooting up a bunch of kids and their teachers as well as his own mother. Assault weapons should not be in the homes of those who are not trained to use them properly. We also need to have mental health checks on anyone who wants to own a gun as well as any family members who live in the house who may have access to the gun.
Sign me up :D
well it seems that kids not having gun saftey and educated on them is the ones that wind up hurt or going out and hurting others,, some parents don't teach or own a fire arm and don't see the educations importance,, well news flash those children leave go to a friends that their parents own some and curiosity causes damage,,, thats why i firmly feel gun safty should be in our school.. my thoughts
I wish I could live there. Kim....your comment is probably one of the most ignorant things I have read on here....You're for gun safety, but don't want to teach it in the institution that we send our kids to learn in? wow.
I think it should be a required subject in all schools
Jesus People USA, The Farm, Twin Oaks... not a huge deal. This is no different than country club HOA's and gated communities, without the snobs and more guns. "Extremists"? Why are people so title happy? A couch potato calls snowboarding an 'extreme sport'. So I guess it makes sense that a sheep would call a sheepdog an 'extremist'...
Why is that Kim? Its required to obtain a hunting license or a concealed permit. Drivers ed is required to drive, and is provided by alot of schools, or at least is made accessible by a school. The same logic could apply here. Made it accessible, people will use it, and more responsible gun ownership and use would follow. There are schools that have trap shooting teams, .22 target/match shooting... it really wouldn't be that much of a stretch. Just like drivers ed, I don't see it being a teacher in a classroom teaching about firearms. But a school that promotes and makes an off-campus class accessible to the general mass of students...I could see that being a success.
A group of extremists.
Bad idea. Gun safety should NEVER be a subject in school. I'm for gun safety an all. But not in schools.
i think its a great idea,,,, I belive that gun saftey should be a manditory class in our schools anyway, by the time i was 13 i respected firearms because i was taught what they can do if not respected and get in the hands of someone who hasn't been taught. I feel this will become a trend and more people will want to do this or move to the walled community, I know it will be a safe place thats for sure,,,,,
