Commissioners add $300,000 capital improvement reserve to 2015 budget.
COLFAX, WA - The Whitman County Commissioners are preparing to plan the budget for 2015 fiscal year. They said this time around, they'll be focusing on the future.

The commissioners met Monday morning to adopt the budget calendar and goals. Commissioner Art Swannack said they'll add a $300,000 capital improvement reserve to the budget that'll eventually fund renovations of county facilities.

"Because we have several buildings that need work yet, but we don't have the dollars set aside to do that, so we're going to being proactive in that aspect," said District One Whitman County Commissioner Art Swannack.

The commissioner's budget goals also include $350,000 in cuts that they weren't able to make in 2014. Swannack said the commissioners hope to speed up the process this year, and adopt a budget in October. However, the county's budget is dependent on the financial decisions that are made in Olympia. Swannack said state funding accounts for about a third of the county's budget.
