Whitman County Deputies investigated two separate cases where the suspect allegedly used cutting torches to cut up farm implements before hauling them away, presumably for their scrap value. Deputies believed both of the thefts were related based on evidence they obtained over the course of the investigation.
After following several leads throughout Whitman and Latah Counties, investigators confronted Mattson about his involvement in the thefts. Mattson fully cooperated with investigators and admitted involvement in both thefts as well as an additional theft which occurred during the same time period on Estes Rd. in Latah County.
Mattson is expected to face charges in Whitman County for Theft, Trespassing and Malicious Mischief.
