MOSCOW, ID - A Washington State University professor was arrested in Moscow Wednesday morning for raping a female family member dating back to when she was 16.

Moscow Police arrested Andrew Appleton after a report was filed with authorities stating that the now adult victim and Appleton had been been in a sexual relationship for multiple years. This morning, the victim arranged to meet Appleton at East City Park in Moscow. When he arrived, Appleton was confronted by police and arrested after he accompanied them to the police station.

"This morning we filed a formal criminal complaint charging him with the felony offense of rape," said Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson. "He's had his preliminary appearance and has a preliminary hearing set for October third at one o'clock. And that's the current status of the case."

Appleton is currently being held at the Latah County Jail. Investigators will conduct interviews and process evidence related to the case. The report states that Appleton began touching the victim inappropriately in the fall of 2009. Since 1994, Appleton has served as an associate professor at WSU in the school of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs. WSU officials said that he has been removed from his duties at the university and he is no longer on their campus.
