The best way to steer clear of gastroenteritis is washing your hands.
LEWISTON, ID - Tis the season for viruses. KLEW News talked to Idaho Public Health about one illness that's been going around the Valley.

Often referred to as the "stomach flu," gastroenteritis makes itself known with abdominal cramps, loose stool, vomiting and fever. This nasty virus is a contagious one.

"When people gather and have holidays together and it gets colder and people are indoors more, we do see more infectious illnesses," said Public Health's Family and Community Health Administrator Candi Barton.

Anyone can fall victim to this stomach flu, not to be confused with influenza. The best way to steer clear is washing your hands often and being careful about sharing with others and touching public surfaces. If you do get sick, it's important to drink lots of liquids to avoid dehydration.
