Spokane resident injured from shrapnel while target practicing

STEPTOE, WA - A man was injured on Saturday after he was hit with shrapnel while target practicing in Steptoe Washington.

According to the Whitman County Sheriff's Office, 50-year-old Ronald Kiima, of Spokane, suffered a shrapnel wound to his right shoulder while target practicing at a location on Blackwell Road, south of Steptoe.

Deputies say several people were target practicing with Star Targets, which are designed to explode.

Investigators learned a metal box was placed directly in front of the exploding target, which was responsible for the shrapnel.

Emergency personnel transported Kiima via Medstar Helicopter to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane where he remains in stable condition.
