In the last election District Six was limited to Latah County, but due to redistricting, Schmidt will also need to win over Benewah county to keep his position in the Idaho Senate. Schmidt believes the Gem State needs to focus on education and health care.
"I think that if Idaho pays attention to those two details, the economy will improve," said Schmidt. "Businesses will see that Idaho's taking care of business appropriately."
Education is the issue that's receiving the most attention in this election, and Schmidt stands with the majority of Democrats that oppose Propositions One, Two and Three. He approves of some aspects of the laws, but he doesn't think that enough input was gathered from educators before the laws were proposed. As a family physician, Schmidt is also concerned about health care. Over the last two years, he has served on the Health and Welfare Committee, and the Health Care Task Force. He's also exploring the possibility of expanding Medicaid in Idaho.
