LEWISTON, ID - An expansion of the Port of Lewiston may soon be underway if a permit is approved by the Nez Perce Tribe's government consultation committee.

The Walla Walla District Corps of Engineers is proposing to approve use of Corps-owned property by the Port of Lewiston.

"The dock expansion will consist of adding an additional berthing area to the Port of Lewiston dock," said Port of Lewiston Manager David Doeringsfeld.

The expansion would add a 150 foot dock down river to the original 125 foot dock.

"That will allow us to moore two barges at one time. That doubles our productivity, the efficiency of our operations and makes it a lot safer for our dock workers," said Doeringsfeld.

"This picture here shows what the proposed expansion would look like," said Reporter Whitney Hise. "This barge here, sits on the original dock at the Port of Lewiston and this yellow grid shows where the 150 foot dock would be constructed."

"The total project is approximately 2.9-million-dollars. Of that, the Port of Lewiston has received some grant funds from the state of Idaho," said Doeringsfeld. "But, we are also out there looking at ways to fund the project."

The port filed for a permit that would enable the facility to receive larger cargo on a regular basis. The development is part of the Corps' compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

"We do have several steps to go before completing this overall process," said Corps Spokesman Joseph Sax. "It has a lot of unusual parts and it is not an unusual request and we are getting there."

Once the permit is approved by Nez Perce Tribal consultants, the Corps will then begin a review process.
