PULLMAN, WA - The Sacred Heart Church held a non-denominational pet blessing to honor Saint Francis of Assisi, and any well behaved critters were invited.

The pet owners at the event were grateful to have an opportunity to combine two important aspects of their lives.

"They've been such a big part of my life and such a comfort for me, and my religion is a comfort for me as well," said rabbit owner Loretta Dragoo. "And I treat them just like they're people to me."

This was the second year the Sacred Heart Church held an animal blessing, and they're hoping to make it an annual event. The majority of the pets were dogs and cats, but there were birds, rabbits, and even fish as well. One bird escaped during the blessing, but the owners were able to get him back.

The church accepted donations on behalf of the Whitman County Humane Society, an organization that's raising money to build an off-leash dog park in Pullman.
