MOSCOW, ID - The largest single-day food drive on the Palouse is coming up on Saturday, and they'll need all the help they can get.

On Saturday, December 1st, Palouse Cares will send volunteers out into their community with one mission: to collect as much food as possible.

"It's all about food," said Palouse Cares Director Rick Minard. "We just knock on as many doors as we can get in that two hour time. We do it from 10 till noon on Saturday, December first. We just ask people to give for the food bank and so far, they've really been generous with their donations."

Since 2006, the drive has donated over 130,000 pounds of food to food banks on the Palouse.

"Last year we raised about 38,000 pounds of food, and this year we're hoping to break the 40,000 pounds," said Minard.

This year, the food banks in dire need of things like canned goods, cereal and peanut butter.

"And especially this year," said volunteer Ryann Carter. "A lot of the food in the food banks has gone to Hurricane Sandy victims and so we need more volunteers this year than we have in the past because the bank is running low."

Getting involved is easy. There are local gathering places in Moscow, Pullman, Colfax, Potlatch, Palouse, Deary, Bovill, and Genesee. If you'd like to collect food, just show up at your local gathering place at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

"It's always a blast," said Carter. "So I'm actually looking forward to it this Saturday. I'm pretty excited."

And if you'd like to donate food, just have it ready at your door for when the volunteers come knocking.

"If you live in the city limits of all those towns I mentioned, we'll hit your door," said Minard.

Palouse Cares volunteers will be knocking on doors between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, and there will be silent auctions in Pullman and Moscow later that day.
