LEWISTON, ID - The city of Lewiston could have a new fire chief come next week.

Travis Myklebust has been working at the Lewiston Fire Department for nearly 23 years. He most recently stepped into the position of Interim Fire Chief, when Garry DeJong stepped down in April.

Now, City Manager Jim Bennett is recommending him for the permanent position. Myklebust, who's currently in Texas for a fire rescue international conference, said he's very happy and humbled by the news.

"I'm extremely happy," said Myklebust. "It's an honor to be recommended as Lewiston's next chief. The amount of support I received today from the department, the members in the community, other city staff, it's very humbling the amount of support I have for this recommendation."

Myklebust said completing a strategic and master plan are priorities if voted in as the next fire chief. The vote will take place at the city council meeting on Monday.
