COLFAX, WA - Daniel Lazcano's Defense Attorney, Eric Christianson, asked the judge for permission to withdraw as his defense attorney and asked the county to hire him as a public defender in the case.
The judge allowed Christianson to withdraw, however he ruled that Daniel Lazcano will be represented by the public defender he was originally assigned before he hired Christianson for the previous trial.
"We do have contracted public defenders," said Whitman County Judge Dave Frazier. "Mr. Monson was previously appointed, and is on the contract."
Christianson said that the Lazcanos' had to raise funds in order to hire him for the first trial and will not be able to afford his services for the retrial. The court plans on scheduling Daniel Lacano's retrial next Friday, and the sentencing for his misdemeanor charge of improper disposal of human remains was postponed.
Frank Lazcano's sentencing was scheduled Friday afternoon, and it will take place on April 12th.
