Lapwai High School lock down ends peacefully

Lapwai High School lock down ends peacefully
LAPWAI, ID - A lockdown at Lapwai High School ends peacefully following a barricade situation and heroic negotiating by a new officer.

According to Tribal Police Chief Dave Rogers, both tribal police and Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office responded shortly before 10:00a.m. to a suicidal student at the high school. The 15-year-old boy had barricaded himself in a classroom with a knife. An FBI hostage negotiator was on their way, however new officer Shane Auginaush was able to talk the student down after about an hour.

"He was taken into custody with no injury and no harm to anybody," said Chief Rogers. "And while we have placed a charge on him the purpose is to hold him so that working with Nez Perce County sheriff we can get the individual to some mental health assistance that he needs."

Chief Rogers said he's happy with how all his officers responded, the peaceful outcome, and especially Auginaush's ability to gain trust and talk the young boy down.
