Lewiston hill speed limit increases by ten miles per hour for half-mile
LEWISTON, ID - The speed limit on a half-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 95 in north Lewiston will increase by ten miles per hour early next week.

The Idaho Transportation Department recently conducted a study on U.S.Highway 95 leading up the Lewiston hill, and because of those results an increase in speed from 45 to 55 miles per hour will begin next week. Idaho Transportation Department, Traffic Engineer Jared Hopkins said that the increase was determined by the 85th percentile, which means that 85% of motorist are already traveling at that higher rate of speed.

"Research has shown that using the 85th percent speed creates the least amount of crashes and provides the most consistent travel speeds," said Hopkins.

ITD officials said that more than 5,000 vehicles travel along that segment of Highway 95 daily. The speed limit will increase when the new signs are installed on Tuesday.
