KOOSKIA, ID - As firefighting crews, who worked overnight to contain the fire were rotated out, other groups came in to mop up the area.

One of the teams assisting with mop up was a firefighter team from ICIO, the Idaho Correctional Institution in Orofino. Minimum custody offenders who have gained privileges in the prison system are trained to assist with local fires.

Lieutenant Greg Heun said many of the prisoners working, are just about done with their sentences. He said no sex offenders are allowed to work on the Givens Hall Work Projects and generally it's many DUI offenders. Each worker makes about $1.25 an hour. Heun said the real life experience and training allows many prisoners to become firefighters after serving time.
