LPD reports 50% increase of credit card and check fraud during Sept

LPD reports 50% increase of credit card and check fraud during Sept
LEWISTON, ID - Check and credit card fraud are on the rise, that's according to the Lewiston Police Department.

More than 23 cases of fraud were reported to the Lewiston Police Department in September, an estimated increase of 50%, according to LPD. Mailboxes are the gateway to fraudulent cases, as crooks steal credit cards and checks often times without us even knowing.

"They're actually what we call washing the information," said LPD Lieutenant Hurd. "Which is that they take the account number and names off the check and they go online and create they're own checks using your information and then they go to Spokane, other jurisdictions and cash the checks."

Lieutenant Hurd said that often times small purchases are made to see if the theft goes undetected before they go buy the big ticket items. If you are a victim of fraud, contact your bank immediately and law enforcement.
