LEWISTON, ID - Four people are safe Monday night after escaping an early morning fire in Lewiston ... despite resistance.

A woman who didn't want to leave her pets behind kept trying to re-enter the burning building. Emergency personnel responded to the fire at around 2:00 Sunday morning. The Victorian style home, that was converted to apartments years ago, was recently condemned, however four people were inside the building.

Lewiston firefighters rescued one person from a tree, while another person had to be restrained while trying to get back into the home.

"Kept trying to sneak back into the house, because they were concerned about their pets that were inside," said LPD Captain, Tom Greene. "But it's my understanding that the fire was extinguished fairly rapidly."

Firefighters were able to save the pets from the building. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
