LEWISTON, ID - People living near the Big Cougar Fire have now been ordered to leave their homes.

The Nez Perce County Sheriff has issued a stage three evacuation for residents along the Snake River from China Garden to Captain John Creek due to fire progression. The blaze has grown to 30,000 acres and is listed at zero percent containment. More than 150 homes are still threatened despite heavy suppression efforts from the ground and air.

"We have 253 firefighter, eight crews, four helicopters, four engines, and three dozers currently on the fire," said Tom Rhode.

A community meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Flat Iron and Waha Roads. Anyone who owns property in the vicinity of the fire is encouraged to attend.
