Elementary student injured after stepping off school bus and hit by car

CLARKSTON, WA -The parents of a local boy are counting their blessings, following a scary turn of events, after their young son stepped off his school bus, Monday afternoon and was hit by a car.

The victim's name and age has been released. KLEW News confirms that it's ten-year-old Mark Chambers, and he is now at home recovering, with minor injuries, after being taken to the local hospital in Lewiston.

Police said this all happened after Chambers was hit by a car, just moments after he stepped off of his bus on the 1900 block of 13th street in Clarkston. According to a press release sent out by the Washington State Patrol, charges are pending against 52-year-old Greg Ausman, the driver, of Clarkston. Police say he allegedly tried to pass the school bus, while it was stopped, on the right side and hit the the boy.

"That was a designated stop, the flashers were on, the stop sign was out," said Clarkston School District Superintendent Darcey Weisner. . "I want to be very clear, sometimes we get people that go on the left side of these buses when the stop lights out and the flashers are on. This is quite a bit more serious in that they were going on the right side of the bus."

The fifth-grader at Highland Elementary plans to return to school this week. The suspect, Ausman was not injured and charges are pending at this point.
