LEWISTON, ID - A collapsed sewer main continues to cause a detour for downtown traffic from the Interstate Bridge to 5th Street.

Through a series of events, the collapsed pipe was found nearly 18 feet underground on the 300 Block of Main Street. Crews have been working on the leak for the past two days and successfully patched the leak earlier today. However, because of back-filling, the roads are not expected to open until early afternoon tomorrow.

"It's not a normal thing," said Waste Water Collection Supervisor Brian Ellison. "There are a whole bunch of things that happened to lead to this event. No one thing could be attributed to it."

Ellison said the leak could have started a while back after a water leak made ground fill heavier. He also said some back-fill could have contributed, as well as old clay piping.

For a status update on downtown road conditions you can contact the Public Works Department at 746-1316 extension 204.
