LEWISTON, ID - A food drive benefiting both the Idaho Foodbank and the Asotin County Foodbank began Friday evening in Lewiston.

More than 18 local churches are gathering food and money for the community. Church members encourage the public to bring in food or funds to the Salvation Army until 7p.m. Friday evening and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of their new fundraiser "Feed the 5,000."

"It's as easy as going to the store and picking up some food or writing a check if that's what you prefer," said Feed the 5,000 committee member Michelle Schmidt.

Idaho Foodbank Branch Manager Chuck Whitman said the demand for food is very high while donations remain low. All proceeds from this weekend's Feed the 5000 will benefit the Backpack Programs for Elementary School Kids.
