LAWPWAI, ID - The Nez Perce Tribe will welcome home disconnected Nimiipuu members Thursday that have found their way back to the tribe.

Tribal members can get disconnected from their ancestral communities through relocation, college or even adoption. NPTEC Vice Chairman Brooklyn Baptiste said that last year, the General Council passed a resolution to create an event to make all members feel welcome.

"[They] wanted to feel part of the tribe, so we felt that having a ceremony would encapsulate the feeling that they're being brought back into the tribal community," said Baptiste.

Ceremonies are sacred and healing for tribal members. Baptiste said that the welcome home ceremony is very special for the returning members. Anyone is welcome to attend the event at 6 p.m. at the Pi-Nee-Waus Community Center in Lapwai.
