Car crashes and burns after 50-mile police chase

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — Oregon state troopers chased a car 50 miles until it crashed north of Pendleton, and then the burning car had to be pulled from brush to keep the fire from spreading, Oregon State Police said.

The State Police said the chase began Wednesday afternoon when a trooper tried to stop a car that was passing vehicles on the right shoulder of Interstate 84 and doing 115 mph.

More than a half hour later, the car crashed into brush off Oregon 37. Troopers said they ran after 27-year-old Zechariah Ayers of Pendleton and quickly captured him. He was jailed on charges that included reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

Troopers and Umatilla County sheriff's deputies pulled the burning car to a gravel lot to keep the brush from catching fire
