ASOTIN CO. AREA - The rate of growth by the Cache Creek Fire that's burning in the hells canyon area in Asotin and Walloawa Counties slowed down Wednesday night.

The wildfire located about 35 miles south of Clarkston is about 45 percent contained and has consumed 71,000 acres. The north end of the fire remains secure. It will be patrolled by air and engines.

Firefighters will work to improve and hold the Powerline Road area, near the Imnaha River, on the southern portion of the fire. The goal is to hold the fire north of Powerline Road.
