CLARKSTON, WA - Parents of juveniles who are facing detention time in Asotin County, may be required to pay for their children's stay in local detention centers.

Currently, the county pays $125 per night for every juvenile, to stay at either the facility in Lewiston or at Medical Lake in Martin Hall. A new program will require the parents of juveniles who are awaiting trial, or who are detained for a period of approximately one month or less, to pay the boarding fees.

By enacting this program, Asotin County Prosecutor Ben Nichols said it will take the burden off of the tax payers, who're having to pay time and time again for boarding fees of repeat offenders.

"This is an effort to one, recapture some of the tax payer money and two, put some more responsibility on the parents for their children," said Nichols.

Nichols said that he expects Judge William Acey of the Hells Canyon Circuit Superior Court to announce the decision on Monday.
