They will deploy to Oklahoma Thursday as part of the relief efforts of The American Red Cross. The four volunteers are heading out on the early flight at the airport Thursday morning to head out to the heart of the devastation in Oklahoma.
Two EF-5 tornado's and violent flash flooding have shaken the mid-west...a terrifying combination of natural disasters that's killed 20 people. Local American Red Cross volunteers, like veteran Ronna Waller, are flying there to help.
"There's a big reward in helping those people who's lives have been devastated," said Waller. "So it's just the passion we have to assist and give back."
Waller is one of four volunteers from the American Red Cross set to deploy from Latah County Thursday morning, to help the survivors. She spent more than 100 days assisting those in need following Hurricane Sandy, and said she's willing to stay as long as it takes.
"It's really just one day at a time," said Waller. "Those folks who's lives are just devastated in an instant, it's pretty overwhelming as you can imagine. And so we just support them, letting them know that there's people there that can help them get through this one day at a time."
Greater Idaho District Manager Deborah Snyder said the volunteers are placed in different areas in Oklahoma based on their individual skill set and experience.
"Your interests," said Snyder. "What you're interested in doing, the services you're interested in providing for the Red Cross."
A couple from the Troy-Deary area and another woman from Lewiston are deployed for a minimum of two weeks as part of the Disaster Action Team.
If you'd like to help the victims in Oklahoma, there are two fundraisers taking place here in the valley. There's a car wash this Saturday at Del's Feed and Farm Supply on Warner avenue. The weekend after that... the Red Cross is taking donations at Roger's Toyota-Scion as part of their preparedness information event.
