Asotin County Prosecutor Ben Nichols said members of The Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys and The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs recently met with Governor Jay Inslee.
A main topic of concern is rising liquor theft by minors now that it's available in grocery stores. A solution that Nichols said the governor is willing to throw his weight behind, is requiring all box stores to report the amount of alcohol stolen.
"By documenting the amount of lost alcohol we can go to the dollars and cents people and say don't you see all the tax dollars because stolen alcohol is not taxed alcohol," said Nichols.
Nichols said requiring stores in the county to restrict access to alcohol wouldn't hold up against a challenge. This is because the State Liquor Control Board pre-empts local rules.
