New Pullman police chief sworn in
Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson administers the oath of office to Police Chief Gary Jenkins Friday. By Stephanie Hale-LopezPULLMAN - The City of Pullman swore in its new police chief, Gary Jenkins, Friday morning. Jenkins was selected for the position in May. His appointment by Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson was confirmed last Tuesday by the city council. "It's a whole new era for Pullman because when you look at it, we've had (the same) police chief for 30 years," said Johnson. "Most places, police chief turnovers in cities are like four, five or six years. We're very grateful to Lewiston because we had your police chief on our interview panel and he gave us a lot of great insight. The other thing is, Gary comes to us with a lot of credibility, a lot of great experience and some new ideas too. That's what we're looking forward to." Jenkins is familiar with university communities. He was a captain with the Claremont California Police Department for over 26 years before accepting the position in Pullman. Jenkins holds a bachelor's degree in Management from the University of Redlands and a master's in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University. "This is something I think I have aspired to, probably my entire career, but it has been much more focused these last couple of years," said Jenkins. "It really was a matter of finding the right community that I felt was a good fit for me and my family and that they feel I'm a good fit for them too. Sometimes that's a difficult thing to come upon and everything has just worked out so great in Pullman." Jenkins, along with his wife and two daughters, said they're very excited to be in Pullman.
