CLARKSTON - The rainy weather moved the Clarkston Memorial Day service inside Monday.

The Clarkston VFW Post hosted the ceremony.

"Our presence here is a solemn commemoration of these men," said one veteran. "An expression of our tribute to their devoted duty. To their courage and patriotism. By their service on land, sea and air, they have made us their debtors for the flag of our nation that still flies over a land of free people."

The vets set a table for one in honor of Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action. Asotin County Sheriff Ken Bancroft talked about the history and importance of Memorial Day.

"We're honoring those who lived up to that oath by giving the ultimate sacrifice no matter what war we were in," said Asotin County Sheriff Ken Bancroft. Vietnam for us, World War II and Korea for many of our parents and grandparents."

And it was a packed house at the Veterans Home in Lewiston Monday afternoon.

Both residents and visitors attended the ceremony, also moved inside because of the rain. Several local and state politicians were also there, including Congressman Walt Minnick.

He spoke a little bit about his military service and the importance of recognizing those whose lives were forever changed as well as those who never came home.

"My father, my brother in law and I all share one thing, that is, we came home alive and prepared to go on to enjoy the bounty of America, to marry and raise families, to have careers and to enjoy the bounty of this great, free country," said Minnick.
