CRAIGMONT - The dream of a Highland High School senior last October became a reality Monday.

Kameron Mercado's idea for his senior project was to build a memorial to honor veterans. After months of planning and two months of construction, Monday the Craig Mountain Veterans Memorial was dedicated by Idaho Congressman Walt Minnick.

"Memorial Day is an appropriate occasion for those of us who are blessed to live in this country," said Minnick. "To recognize, memorialize and acknowledge those who have made it possible for us to be among the privileged few who can gather today to celebrate the accomplishments of those who have served for us in the military, who have fought our wars, protected our freedoms and this next generation of young men and women, of whom, Kameron is clearly one of the finest."

Craigmont's City Park was filled with over 100 people braving the rain for the dedication.

Along with Minnick's words, Craigmont's Mayor Roger Riggers emceed the event. Following a long list of thank-yous to businesses and people across the region for helping find the project, he offered Kameron a medal for his admirable work and a certificate of appreciation to Earl Streibeck for his extensive help with the effort.

While Kameron said he couldn't have done it without the help of the community, he may not yet understand the magnitude of his efforts.

"When I look at doing something that I can that would make a difference, I look straight to the veterans for what they have done for our country," said Mercado. "That's what I wanted to do this for. I don't think I've realized exactly how big. I always thought it would be something kind of nice, but now I see the turnout of this. It's a lot bigger than what I'd planned on having."

Kameron, who graduated from Highland High this past weekend, plans to enter the Air Force.
